THE STORY
The print was inspired by the vibrant and energetic style of Gumboot dancing.
Growing up in Zimbabwe, there was a shared culture with South Africa through food, film, dance and music. As a child, I was drawn to Gumboot dancing because of its energy and sense of fun, without really understanding where it came from.
As I grew older, I began to appreciate the deeper meaning behind the dance. Born in the South African mines during the Gold Rush, Gumboot became a way for miners to communicate when they were not allowed to speak. The rhythmic sounds of their boots allowed them to communicate with one another, while the dance brought together different cultural influences.
What began as a practical form of communication became an expression of solidarity, resistance and resilience.
That contrast stayed with me: something so energetic and joyful carrying such a powerful history.
That is what inspired the print.
